Phone Addiction Almost Cost Me My Faith
What changed when I treated my phone like the spiritual problem it actually is.
I used to think phone addiction was a productivity problem. Then I noticed I couldn’t sit through a 10-minute prayer without reaching for my pocket. That’s when it became a spiritual problem.
The honest math
I checked my screen time. Six hours a day. Most of it Instagram, YouTube Shorts, and Reddit. That’s six hours of someone else’s voice in my head, and zero hours of God’s.
You can’t out-pray that. You have to cut the noise first.
What actually worked
Greyscale. Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Color Filters → Greyscale. The dopamine hit dies overnight.
App timers, but ruthless. 10 minutes for socials. The screen actually locks. I broke it twice the first week, then stopped trying.
Phone outside the bedroom. Bought a £12 alarm clock. First morning thought is no longer a notification — it’s prayer or Scripture.
What changed
I started hearing God again. Not loud, mystical stuff. Just the quiet conviction that comes when there’s space for it. Turns out the Holy Spirit was always speaking — I just had AirPods in.
